Mumbai Indians (MI) is among the most successful franchises in IPL history. But following a couple of challenging seasons, fans are eager to see MI hold the IPL trophy once again in 2025. In order to achieve that, the team should play wisely by choosing its playing XI. The selection of suitable players can turn the decision in favor of winning tight matches. With a combination of old warhorses and young guns, MI can potentially excel. In this article, we shall examine five major playing XI choices that can enable Mumbai Indians to lift the IPL 2025 trophy. Who Opens With Rohit Sharma In IPL 2025? Image Source: Getty Images Mumbai Indians had a settled opening combination in Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan for the previous four seasons. Sharma will have a new opening combination for the IPL 2025, with Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks being the two possibilities. Ideally, both should open together but MI shifting Rohit down the order does not look likely. Jacks is among the world's most harmful batters. His total T20 strike rate is 156. He featured in eight games for RCB in the last season and scored 230 runs at 175 strike rate with a century included. But Jacks did not cross the 15-run boundary in five games. Rickelton, however, has been very consistent. He has accumulated 866 runs in the previous two SA20 seasons at a strike rate of 175.7 and average of 54. Rickelton also addresses the wicket keeper position and provides them with a left-right combination at the top. The fourth is up for consideration based on factors like conditions and opposition. In home conditions at Wankhede, two overseas spinners are not providing much value. Jacks would be an excellent option to have in the team on a good batting pitch and he can be adapted. Mumbai Indians can have both Santner and Mujeeb play together in away matches at the Chepauk and Lucknow, where the spinners are well supported. Having Mujeeb would be a good strategy against left-arm dominant teams too. The shortage of quality spinners has long been a weakness for Mumbai Indians. They look determined to address that imbalance. Also Read | 5 Key Playing XI Decisions DC Must Make to Win IPL 2025 Title What If Jasprit Bumrah Misses Out? Image Source: BCCI Jasprit Bumrah is the key player of the Mumbai Indians team and he turns them into one of the strongest contenders to lift the trophy. But without him, their bowling unit would be different. Bumrah was out of the Champions Trophy 2025 due to back injury and there is a high chance that he may not be fully fit for the first half of the IPL 2025. If Bumrah is to miss a couple of games during the season, Mumbai Indians will need to reshuffle their line-up. Besides Bumrah, their other pace bowlers are Boult, Deepak Chahar, Arjun Tendulkar, Reece Topley, Lizaad Williams. Of these, Boult and Chahar would be definite starters. Williams is still recovering from an injury and his availability is in question. Without Bumrah, MI will have to try two foreign pacers, cutting into a foreign batting spot or a spinning department. How well they make it work there would be pivotal in their IPL 2025 campaign.
