The ICC launched the Champions Trophy, also known as the "Mini World Cup" in 1998. The tournament was initially initiated as the ICC Knockout Tournament to be played over four years. The objective was to reap revenue in non-Test playing countries as the tournament was initially played in Kenya and Bangladesh. However with the commercial success of the tournament, it received a stature and was soon played in the premier cricket nations like England and India. Since the 2009 edition, it was felt that only the top 8 counties in ICC ODI rankings will participate in it. The cut-off for rankings was six months before the start of the trophy. The tournament was abandoned after the 2017 edition with the idea of retaining only one global tournament for each of the three formats.
