England must always be ready for a broad spectrum of changes. At present, even as England are 3-0 down before Christmas and having lost the Ashes already ahead of the Boxing Day Test, serious questions loom around the future of the Test team. This was the time for a change, as something was deemed amiss whenever England toured Australia and it all fell apart. Players were dropped; the leadership was questioned; the squad got reshaped. The history of the Ashes has shown how brutal tours can be for one's career. Since 2000, 50 England players have been capped in Tests against Australia, while half of them never again featured for England. Something similar seems likely to happen in this case as well, with a few players being shown the door, considering the batting collapse and a bowling attack that could not apply any pressure. England must revamp with youth. Here are five youngsters aged 21-22 who might be vital to the renaissance of an England Test team. 5 Young Players Who Can Help England Rebuild After Ashes Disaster Asa Tribe - A Cool and Reliable Option for Opener Asa Tribe scores 25,000 test runs pic.twitter.com/9IQdZnn2AA — No Context County Cricket (@NoContextCounty) December 11, 2025 Could Asa Tribe rescue the situation of England's openers? A 21-year-old right-hander raised in Jersey and playing for Glamorgan has indeed had a remarkable season in the County Championship. In 2025, Tribe scored 731 runs at 45, including a double hundred. He has shown that he can bat for long periods, but whenever the need arises, he can get on with his scoring. His unbeaten century for the England Lions at Brisbane showed that he could cope with Australian conditions. The present English openers cannot really apply pressure. Tribe shows some patience, a good defense, and has controlled attacking shots. If picked, he would thus be the first English Test cricketer from the Channel Islands: history in the making. Rew is averaging over 41 while batting at four for Somerset and England Lions. Calmness is his strong point, along with maturity that surpasses his years. He also has wicket-keeping skills, which leave much flexibility to England. If Ollie Pope remains out of form and with Jamie Smith being tested behind the stumps, Rew could either fortify the middle-order batting for England or act as backup in the wicket-keeping department. Ahmed was the youngest ever to debut in Tests for England and has gained good experience in the game; this includes his time in various formats. He is recognized as a leg-spinner, but his batting has improved tremendously. Last County Championship season, he amassed 760 runs, and his average was 50, making five centuries for Leicestershire. Unlike some options England have been trying, Ahmed bowls regularly for his county. He offers a controlling factor with the ball and with the bat; he is looking down the eye of a long-term solution rather than a curbside pick. Sonny Baker - England’s Incoming Express Pacer Sonny Baker, WOW#WeAreSomerset pic.twitter.com/vlefQhyIpk — Somerset Cricket 🏆 (@SomersetCCC) May 8, 2024 Genuine pace is badly required by England as Archer and Wood comes with the risk of injury, and Sonny Baker is the one who just fits that role. At 22, Baker is blisteringly fast and has more or less become the country's fastest bowler, regularly crossing the 90-mph mark. Limited overs within England have been played by him; he has impressed in various domestic competitions. For Hampshire and the England Lions, Baker took 22 wickets in just seven matches and made headlines with his performances in The Hundred. In Baker's case, speed and aggression will be an asset to an England attack that currently sees Mark Wood beset by injury and is carefully managing Jofra Archer's workload. This 21-year-old left-hander recently made a statement with a maiden international hundred in an ODI against South Africa and has been fairly successful for the England Lions. Bethell brings calmness and balance, qualities the position past England's No. 3 has lacked. While the numbers in red-ball will grow, the temperament and skill say he is ready. Young players need to trust England, and Bethell might be the one who will finally fill a position that has stolen the team's energy for years. An Opportune Time for England to Look Ahead Though England's massive defeat in the Ashes has revealed some critical hindrances, yet this situation itself represents an opportunity. Surely these five young players promise skills, hunger, and long-term vision. England should not repeat the mistakes of yesteryears but commit to a rebuild that plans for the future and not just short-term repairs. The Test side of England has a future that rests on bold selection calls; that very time to make those calls is now.
