In an attempt to revive their red-ball campaign following a tough series against South Africa, Zimbabwe have announced a 16-man team for the two-Test series against New Zealand. The naming, announced by Zimbabwe Cricket, brings back experienced campaigners Sikandar Raza and Ben Curran. The matches, part of Zimbabwe’s continued efforts to assert themselves on the Test stage, are scheduled from July 30 to August 3 and August 7 to 11, both at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. With four changes from the squad that faced South Africa earlier in July, Zimbabwe look to find the right blend of experience and emerging talent. To complement Curran and Raza, the selectors have recalled Roy Kaia and Tanunurwa Makoni, while the dropouts include Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Prince Masvaure, Wessly Madhevere, and Kundai Matigimu. The biggest positive for the team is the recall of opening batsman Brian Bennett, who has regained fitness after suffering a concussion during the South Africa series. One of the most prominent additions is Curran, who was rested in the South Africa series after breaking his hand during a Test match against England in May. A technically gifted left-hand batsman, Curran should add solidity at the top of the order. Zimbabwe will be hoping his return injects calm and toughness against one of the world's best seam attacks. While he’s been a consistent performer in white-ball formats, his appearances in the red-ball game have been limited in recent years. His selection underlines Zimbabwe’s strategy to rely on seasoned players with all-round capabilities to take on a strong New Zealand side. Raza's encounter with the bat and ball may play a pivotal role in molding the team's performance on and off the pitch. Combined with him, addition of Kaia and Makoni strengthens the batting lineup. With a combination of experience and new talent, selectors seem intent on creating a competitive and well-balanced Test team in the making.
