Former India pacer Zaheer Khan has backed Arshdeep Singh to play against New Zealand in India’s final group-stage match of the Champions Trophy. With India already through to the semi-finals, Zaheer believes it’s the perfect time to test the left-arm pacer, especially considering Mohammed Shami's recent injury scare. Shami took a blow to his shin during India’s match against Pakistan, briefly leaving the field for treatment. Though he returned, Zaheer feels there’s no need to risk him in a game that won’t affect India’s qualification. Instead, Arshdeep deserves a chance to prove himself in the 50-over format. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Zaheer Khan said, "If there is any bit of doubt around Shami's fitness, if he's going to be available or not in the semis and finals, then this is the opportunity Arshdeeep to get a look in. He's been with the team in this format but has not got a game, and you don't want him directly facing the music in a big occasion like the finals. So I think the Indian team will be looking at it from that aspect and Shami, even if he's fit, you might see Arshdeep making the playing XI." Arshdeep has been with the squad throughout the tournament but is yet to feature in a game. His exclusion raised questions, especially since he was named ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year. With his ability to swing the ball and trouble batters early, many believe he should get a chance before the crucial semi-final clash. While Harshit has done well, picking up four wickets in two games, Arshdeep remains a strong contender for a spot. Zaheer feels a game against New Zealand could give him much-needed exposure in ODI conditions. New Zealand, who have also qualified for the semi-finals, will be a good test for Arshdeep. Their batting lineup has been in good form, with Will Young, Tom Latham, and Rachin Ravindra all scoring big runs. If given an opportunity, Arshdeep can showcase his ability to handle pressure against a quality side. With the semi-final opponent still uncertain, India needs to ensure their squad is well-prepared. If Arshdeep performs well against New Zealand, he could strengthen India’s pace attack and provide an extra option in case of injuries. Zaheer’s suggestion makes sense, as India looks to balance their squad ahead of the knockout stage.
