Yuzvendra Chahal has been confirmed as a Northamptonshire signing for the 2026 County Championship and One-Day Cup. This marks the Indian leg-spinner’s third tenure with the English side. Chahal, 35, will participate in the second half of the season as one of the club’s two overseas players. Chahal has previously delivered impressive performances for Northamptonshire, claiming 44 wickets across his prior stints. This season alone, he took 12 wickets in three matches, including a standout 6/118. The club’s management cited his consistent impact and experience as reasons for his reappointment. Northamptonshire coach Darren Lehmann said, “Yuzi is a magnificent asset to this squad. His record across his career speaks for itself and he brings so much class and experience to the group. I loved working with him this year and am excited to go again in 2026… For young spinners in the group like Nirvan Ramesh and Stuart van der Merwe, having Yuzi around to guide them will be a huge plus for their game." Conway, who captured 20 wickets in four appearances last season, will be available for the first half of the campaign. Lehmann highlighted Conway’s adaptability, consistency, and ability to take wickets across different pitch conditions. Chahal’s chances of playing for India in the near future remain slim. He has fallen behind Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, and Ravi Bishnoi in the pecking order for limited-overs cricket. Nevertheless, Northamptonshire’s decision demonstrates confidence in his ability to guide young spinners while contributing significantly with the ball. His return also emphasizes the growing trend of experienced Indian cricketers participating in County cricket to refine skills and maintain competitive match practice abroad.
