A young cricketer from Kolkata, Deb Ghosh, lost his life after being allegedly drugged and robbed while travelling to a club cricket match. He was 17 years old. The teenager had come 70 km from his hometown of Hasnabad. His body was recovered on January 18. Deb Ghosh had gone out that morning for his cricket match. However, he was reportedly drugged on a bus during his journey. According to a report by Times of India, a couple of individuals gave him a drink that was spiked with something, which caused him to feel drowsy. His mother narrated the story of what had happened as she described how she received a call at 07:00 AM on Sunday from the Minakhan Rural Hospital where his son was admitted. His father said to the TOI: "He was drowsy and told us he was taken by some men after he got off a bus at Science City. He was made to swallow a spiked drink before they took his wallet and phone." Though medical measures were undertaken, Deb lost his life. Meena (Deb's mother) said: "Later, we learnt that he died. No one told us exactly what happened." This incident is indeed shocking, but the family feels sad over it, for in their eyes the Kolkata police never acted with all due promptness over this issue. They also added that his missing report was not even lodged by the cops at five police stations at Kolkata and 24 North Parganas. This tragic incident has increased the list of unfortunate deaths that occur either playing cricket or traveling to a cricket ground.
