After India's head coach Gautam Gambhir had called the India vs Pakistan match in the Champions Trophy "just another game", former cricketer Ravi Shastri, in his typical light-hearted tone, came out saying Gambhir might be feeling a lot more than what he is showing. Speaking on the ICC Review, Shastri said that Gambhir's soothing statements in front of the camera are just for the media. He thinks that Gambhir will be looking to win that match for which pressure is all the way and would want India to beat Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025. India and Pakistan are in the same group as they were in every previous tournament. Shastri said that Gambhir wouldn't want that he was the coach who lost the match and was reminded afterward. Interestingly, when Shastri was India’s coach, the team lost badly to Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and got knocked out in the Super 12 stage. Shastri said: “I was the coach for seven years. Whenever I was asked, I said the same thing (as Gambhir). But let me assure you, deep down, there's a lot more to that than you actually think—that's for the media. You have to say it. But deep down, you want to win that. Because if you don't, you'll be reminded of it until the next time you play against Pakistan." They're not bothered about the last 10 games if you won eight or nine. But they'll remind you if you lose one, until the next time you play them." The former India head coach concluded: “It can be a taxi driver, it could be anyone on the street. What happened to India? The same question to Pakistan. What happened to Pakistan? So it always plays on your mind, whether you like it or not, it's a different game. Different beasts altogether.” Shastri’s comments came after Gambhir’s interview with Star Sports during the BCCI Naman Awards. In the interview, Gambhir had played down the hype around the India-Pakistan match, saying that for him, it was just another game of cricket. Gambhir said: "We don't go to the Champions Trophy thinking the 23rd is the most important game. All 5 matches are important. Our mission is to go to Dubai to win all the matches, but if that is one game in the middle of winning the Champions Trophy, we're going to take it as seriously as possible. Also, when India and Pakistan play, the emotions will be high, but the contest remains the same. It is between bat and ball. For me, it remains the same."
