India's Australia tour during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy was a nightmare. India lost the series 3-1 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and missed out on a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. This was after India were already whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand at home. Therefore, beating Australia was important, but the team did not succeed. Only Jasprit Bumrah performed well with his good performances. But the rest of the players, particularly the batters, including captain Rohit Sharma, failed to meet expectations. Rohit had a very disappointing stint and had scored only 31 runs in five innings in three Tests. He even missed the first Test because of personal issues. Rohit Explains Why He Dropped Himself In advance of the fifth Test in Sydney, Rohit made a shocking decision. He withdrew himself from playing XI. Discussing about the this with former Australian captain Michael Clarke on Beyond 23 Cricket podcast, Rohit explained the reason. According to him, he was not making runs and thought it was the appropriate moment to. provide the opportunity to some other player. So, I mean, I'm like, okay, if I'm not hitting the ball well, it is right now and I spoke to the coach and the selector who were there on the tour as well. And they kind of agreed, not agreed." He added: "There was an argument around it. You try and put the team first and just look at what the team wants make the decision accordingly and sometimes it will work and sometimes it may not. So that's how it goes. Every decision you try and make, you're not guaranteed success or you're not guaranteed that this is the right decision that you've done." He showed confidence in young batter Shubman Gill, who missed the fourth Test. But Gill too could not seize the chance. He got only 33 runs in two innings of Sydney Test and registered only 93 runs in five innings in the series. What's Next for Rohit Sharma? Following the disappointing Test series, Rohit is currently playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He will again come back to captain the Indian Test team in a five-match Test series in England, which begins on June 20.
