Afghanistan have kept their hopes alive for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, they defeated England in their do-or-die match by 8 runs where Ibrahim Zadran (177) and Azmatullah Omarzai (41 and 5 for 58) were the star performers of the match. Hashmatullah Shahidi and his boys are set to clash against Australia in another virtual knockout match for a semi-final spot. A win here would fetch them a knockout ticket and a defeat would show them a disappointing group exit. Ahead of the important clash, the Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi was seen giving a befitting reply to a journalist when he tried triggering him with a ‘Glenn Maxwell’ question. Afghanistan and Maxwell, a never-ending love affair, hold a special recognition in tomorrow’s match. Glenn Maxwell scored the greatest ODI innings against Afghanistan last time when these two teams met in the 50-over ODI World Cup in 2023. The match not only saw this blistering innings but also witnessed an Aussie allrounder rejuvenating himself amidst the injuries to seal a victory with a semi-final spot. Afghanistan knows that they can beat Australia but they will have to face and demolish the Aussie strength in the lineup, Glenn Maxwell. During a press conference ahead of the Australia clash, a journalist asked a question related to Maxwell to Hashmatullah Shahidi and his plans to tackle the allrounder. Shahdi wasn’t impressed at all and delivered a befitting reply to him. As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Shahidi said: "You think we will come only to play with (Glenn) Maxwell? Do you think it will be like that? We have planned for the entire Australian team, and I know that he (Maxwell) played really well in the 2023 World Cup, but that’s part of history.” Shahidi reminded everyone of their famous victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024 last year. He said that the team has plans for everyone, not particularly for just one player. He further said: “After that, we beat them in T20 World Cup, and we think about all (the entire) opposition team. We are not coming to the ground with plan for individual players. We will try our best to come with the planning, and we are not playing only Maxwell – we are playing Australia.” Afghanistan beat England in their last match and made a solid statement that no team should ever underestimate them at any cost, especially in the ICC tournaments.
