Umran Malik, a pace sensation who came as a storm in Indian Cricket but couldn’t grab the opportunities presented to him. A pace bowler who had that extra pace to rattle anyone’s stump but is struggling to even get noticed in recent times. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach Dale Steyn has some banger of words for Umran Malik ahead of the new edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Steyn said that Malik should not worry about his place, instead, he should be more focused on his length and wicket-taking abilities. Dale Steyn, during his tenure as a bowling coach for SRH in 2022 and 2023 has worked with this young pacer. Malik took 22 wickets in 2022 and impressed everyone with his sheer pace and perfect length. However, his form dipped in the last two editions where he took just 5 wickets in IPL 2023 and got worse in 2024 where he was leaking runs throughout the tournament due to which SRH didn’t retain him for IPL 2025. In an interaction with ESPNcricinfo, Steyn said: “Just like a Ferrari has six gears, you don't have to use all six gears. The Ferrari still can operate in first, second and third and fast bowlers are much the same. They got to be able to know when to use their gears.” Steyn further mentioned that Malik became too focused on his reputation as a bowler which ultimately worsened his case and contrarily affected his game. He further said: "I think sometimes what happens is some guys get into the game and they get caught up by what's happening all around them. 60,000 people chanting and screaming and you feel like, 'I've got to run in and I got to bowl 160 kph', which is great. But, if it goes against the game plan and it goes against the run of play, you're going to go for 60, 70 and that's not going to do your team any good. It's not going to even do you any good.” "A couple of games later, you might find yourself out of the team and a season later, you might not find yourself within any franchises. So, you really have to harness that speed and make sure you are using it well." The 25-year pacer from Kashmir was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2025 but he is currently struggling with his hip injury. His participation in the league is still uncertain.
