Indian selector Ajit Agarkar has explained the rationale behind choosing Karun Nair over Sarfaraz Khan for India’s upcoming Test squad against England. The Squad for the England five-match Test series was announced on Saturday, and India has opted for Karun Nair ahead of Sarfaraz Khan. Speaking about the decision during the press conference, Agarkar felt that the Indian team could use a bit of experience in the middle order in the absence of Virat Kohli. "Sometimes you just have to make good decisions. Sarfaraz, I know he got a 100 in the first Test and then didn't get runs. Sometimes it's decisions the team management takes," Agarkar explained. Selection Challenge ahead The selection dilemma between Sarfaraz Khan and Karun Nair has been widely discussed, especially given their respective performances and experience. Sarfaraz Khan, despite scoring an impressive century in the first Test, has struggled to maintain consistency. In six matches, he played 11 innings, accumulating 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including one century and three fifties, with a highest score of 150. In six matches, he played 7 innings scoring 374 runs at a formidable average of 62.33. His unbeaten 303* against England in 2017 remains one of the standout innings in recent Indian Test cricket history. However, he hasn’t featured in Tests since then, making his recall noteworthy for adding much-needed experience to the side. With Kohli’s exit, the selectors are under pressure to balance youth with experience to strengthen the batting lineup. "At the moment, Karun has scored heaps of runs in domestic, has played a bit of Test cricket, played a bit of county cricket. With Virat not there, clearly we're lacking a bit of experience. We felt his experience could help," Agarkar said. India's tour of England will begin on June 20, where India will play their first Test at Headingley, Leeds.
