Former England captain Michael Vaughan has criticized Rohit Sharma's current form, suggesting that he would be dropped from the playing eleven if not for his popularity. Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been struggling with form in the ongoing IPL. In the three matches he has played so far, he has managed scores of 0, 8, and 13 while opening the innings for the five-time champions Mumbai Indians. While Vaughan acknowledged Rohit's contributions as a leader, he pointed out that if it were any other player, they would likely have been dropped from the playing eleven. "Remember, you are judging Rohit just as a batter now because he's not the captain (of Mumbai Indians). No, I think you can't get away with average numbers, and they are average numbers. If your name is not Rohit Sharma, you're probably losing your place in the side at some stage with those numbers. They're not good enough for a player like Rohit Sharma," he said on Cricbuzz. He also highlighted how Rohit Sharma’s experience as a leader benefits the franchise despite his poor form with the bat. "He is adding his knowledge of being a leader, the tactician that he is, and I see it on a regular basis with India, and I've seen it with Mumbai in the past," he added. 'Rohit Sharma needs runs' Michael Vaughan also stressed that Rohit Sharma must start scoring runs to justify his place in the playing eleven, as his current form is not sustainable. "I cannot cope with those numbers. When you're just the batter now, that's how we have to judge Rohit because he isn't the captain. He needs runs. I am not saying that they'll get rid of him or drop him, but it becomes a problem when you're the star man," Vaughan explained. Rohit Sharma has not been at his best in the IPL in recent years. Over his last five IPL seasons with MI, where he primarily opened the innings, he has managed only six fifty-plus scores. Although he smashed a century last year, it came in a losing cause against the Chennai Super Kings.
