India suffered a shambolic defeat in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This 184 runs defeat of India has not only snatched India's opportunity to win the BGT, but has also reduced the chances of India qualifying for the World Test Championship Final at Lord's in June 2025. India and Australia will play the final Test of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 3rd January 2025 and a victory in this Test will help India to retain the BGT as the series will be levelled at 2-2. It will also be India's first victory at the SCG since 1978. A win at SCG will keep India's WTC Final qualification hopes alive, but they will have to rely on Sri Lanka for this. Sri Lanka and Australia will play a two match series in Sri Lanka. Currently, India is at 114 points and a win at SCG will take India's points tally to 126 which will make their PCT% as 55.26 in the WTC 2023-25. A draw here will knock them out as they would only manage 118 points which won't be enough for the qualification. Australia have way better chances to qualify as they are currently at 118 points and they just need one win in their next three Tests to face the Proteas in the final of the Test Championship. However, if Sri Lanka hands Australia a 1-0 or 2-0 defeat, India will make their way into the finals.' Also Read | Michael Clarke Urges Usman Khawaja to Call It Quits What if IND and AUS Finish at Same Point at the End of WTC 2023-25 cycle? What if both India and Australia finish at the same points? This would happen if the Sri Lanka vs Australia series ends 0-0. These results will see both India and Australia ending this cycle at 126 points and their PCT% will be 55.26. In this case, the team with the most series wins will go ahead. However, if this scenario occurs, both India and Australia will have 3 series wins each and here comes another deciding factor, the points in away wins. The teams with more points in away wins will face South Africa at the Lord's. In this WTC Cycle, India has played 9 away Tests in which they have won 4 (assuming India wins the SCG Test), drawn 2 and lost 3. Out of 108 points played, India would win 56 points at max, which makes their PCT% as 51.85. On the other hand, Australia has played 9 Tests in which they have won 4, drawn 3 (assuming SL vs AUS to end as 0-0) and lost two. In this case, their points will be 60 out of 108 and their PCT% will be 55.56. So, if both India and Australia end up with same points in WTC 2023-25 cycle, Australia will advance into the final as they will have more points in away wins.
