Australia's Steve Smith shattered the record for runs made in Tests by a visiting batsman at Lord's Cricket Ground on the first day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. Smith surpassed Australian legend Warren Bardsley's 575 runs at the Home of Cricket to do so. In his half-century, he also overtook legendary batsman Don Bradman, who had scored 551 runs in eight innings at Lord's. At Lord’s, the 36-year-old boasts a highest score of 215, recorded during the second Ashes Test in 2015. Across his appearances at the venue, he has notched up two hundreds and three fifties. Smith's knock rescued Australia from a dangerous 67 for four after South African seamers Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada ran amok. He recorded a fifty-run stand with all-rounder Beau Webster to paddle Australia to safer shores. The move came off when Steve Smith, set for a big score, was tempted into a drive outside off-stump. The ball seamed and took an insidious thick outside edge, flying to Marco Jansen at slip. It wasn't easy Jansen fumbled the ball twice before eventually coming away with the catch on his third attempt going to ground. The chance was created by snappy fielding on the previous ball, which left Smith on strike. Markram, who is too often underrated as a bowler, again demonstrated his ability to take pivotal wickets. The Proteas went wild in jubilation, well aware of how huge this dismissal could prove to be in the match situation. Prior to this match, the Australia batsman, Steve Smith, was the fourth highest run scorer at Lord's by a visiting batsman. Australia's Warren Bardsley (575), West Indies' Garry Sobers (571) and Australia's Sir Donald Bradman (551) were above Smith. Still, with a scintillating knock of 66 in the first innings against South Africa during WTC Final, Smith is at number one now in the list of top run scorer in Test by a visiting batsman at Lord's with 591* runs. The batter has only one more inning remaining in this game, and he will try to accumulate any number of runs as he can, not only to improve his total at Lord's, but also to contribute to his team's victory in the championship.
