New Zealand Women notched up their initial win of the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup with a dominant 100-run victory over Bangladesh Women at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Friday, October 10. Captain Sophie Devine scored a battling half-century as New Zealand recovered from early setbacks. Bangladesh began impressively with Rabeya Khan striking twice at the beginning to take New Zealand down to 38 for 3 within 11 overs. But Devine, together with Brooke Halliday, pulled their team back with an important 112-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Sophie Devine compiled 63 off 85 balls, demonstrating her experience and nerve, while Brooke Halliday contributed 69 off 104 balls. Their stand stabilized the innings before another mini-collapse left New Zealand at 227 for 9 in 50 overs. For Bangladesh, Rabeya Khan was the bowler's choice with a stunning spell of 3 for 30, while Marufa Akter, Nahida Akter, Nishita Akter Nishi, and Fahima Khatun each took a wicket. Rosemary Mair, Jess Kerr, Amelia Kerr, and Lea Tahuhu tore through the Bangladesh batting lineup early, getting them to 33 for 6 in the first 14 overs. Fahima Khatun tried to rebuild the innings with a gritty 34 off 80 balls, sharing a 33-run stand with Nahida Akter. Later, Rabeya Khan added a fighting 25 off 39 balls, but the rest of the lineup failed to provide support. Bangladesh were bowled out for 127 in 39.5 overs, falling short by exactly 100 runs. For New Zealand, Jess Kerr (3 for 21) and Lea Tahuhu (3 for 22) were the stars of the show, while Rosemary Mair bagged two wickets. It was a team effort all the way by the Kiwis, who outplayed with bat as well as ball to notch their first points in the tournament. With this victory, New Zealand gained some badly needed confidence going into the next game, while Bangladesh will seek to regroup after yet another difficult effort.
