India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has been named the icon player of Ratnagiri Jets for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Maharashtra Premier League (WMPL). The Maharashtra Cricket Association has officially launched the new women’s league this season, providing a much-needed platform for female cricketers in the state. The auction for the much-awaited WMPL took place on Thursday. The WMPL was initially scheduled for June 2024 but was postponed due to the South Africa Women’s tour of India, with no window available later that year. Now, with the green light for 2025, the league aims to spotlight rising talent from across Maharashtra. I’m excited to play a part in shaping the next chapter of this journey and cannot wait to hit the ground running with my new teammates,” Mandhana said in a release. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ratnagiri Jets (@ratnagirijets) Rohit Sharma to be ambassador for the returning T20 Mumbai League The Mumbai Cricket Association are all set to bring back the T20 Mumbai League after a six-year hiatus. The tournament, which last ran in 2019, is set to return in June 2025, after the conclusion of the IPL, with India captain Rohit Sharma expected to be named as the league’s official ambassador. An official announcement regarding the league is expected on Friday, April 18, in Mumbai. The Indian captain is likely to make his appearance in the event. In addition to Rohit, big names like Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, and Prithvi Shaw are also expected to be featured as icon players. “We have not made it mandatory for them to play, but we strongly expect them to play in the T20 Mumbai League. Their participation will only help Mumbai cricket grow and benefit the players and the league," an MCA official told PTI. The revived T20 Mumbai League will feature eight teams, including two new franchises, and has already received more than 2,800 player entries.
