New Zealand's 32-year-old opener, Will Young, registered a century in the first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Pakistan at the National Stadium, Karachi. This was the fourth ODI hundred of his career, also his first overseas ton and his first century in an ICC event. With this century, he also became only the fourth New Zealand player to score a century in the ICC Champions Trophy. Apart from him, Chris Cairns (2000), Nathan Astle (2004), and former skipper Kane Williamson (2017) have achieved this feat. The fifth entrant in the list was no way far as Tom Latham registered his Champions Trophy century in the same match as Will Young. This raised concerns about his selection in the New Zealand squad for the eight-team marquee event. However, Young silenced his critics by scoring a well-constructed century in the tournament opener against the host nation. Having been asked to bat first by Pakistan, Young and Conway started the Kiwi innings, but Conway was sent back by Abrar Ahmed in the eighth over. In the very next over, Kane Williamson, who was among the runs in his last few innings, fell to Naseem Shah for just one run. Daryl Mitchell also walked back to the pavilion in the 17th over after scoring 10 off 24. However, it was Will Young who stood tall from one end and kept the scoreboard ticking. Young, along with Tom Latham, added 99 runs off 108 balls before losing his wicket to Naseem Shah for 107 off 113. New Zealand scored 320 runs at the end of 50 overs and the onus is now on their bowlers to restrict Pakistan from chasing this total.
