The fate of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for India's ODI squad is the subject of speculation yet again. With India scheduled to play a three-match ODI series in Australia from October 19, there are reports that this may be the last international duty for both players. Rohit and Kohli have already retired from Test cricket and T20Is, with ODIs being their sole format left. But with age, workload, and fresh team strategies now being factors, their position in India's 2027 World Cup lineup appears doubtful. Agarkar Talks about Kohli and Rohit's Future Chief selector Ajit Agarkar made the statement that both Kohli and Rohit have not pledged allegiance to the 2027 ODI World Cup. "Both Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma are non-committal about the 2027 World Cup," Agarkar said at a press conference. Agarkar further said that this team was only selected for the coming Australia series and not keeping the 2027 World Cup in sight. He also pointed out that both players have been instructed to play domestic cricket, particularly the Vijay Hazare Trophy, if they are free. "We have made it clear that if guys are free, they should be playing domestic cricket," he further added. This is widely perceived as BCCI's attempt to gauge the commitment of the duo towards the 50-over format. "It’s like a corporate company that doesn’t fire you outright but creates enough pressure to make you leave on your own," Ramesh explained. Rohit, who turns 40 by the 2027 World Cup, and Kohli, at 38, may struggle to keep their fitness and form up if they are to play limited ODIs. The news further suggests that India's upcoming December 2025 ODIs against South Africa may be their last series for India. While that is happening, Shubman Gill has become India's ODI captain after a successful stint in Tests, marking the beginning of India's transition era in cricket. Fans Divided Over Possible Retirement The news has seen a lot of mixed reactions on social media. While some fans are wishing the duo to carry on until the 2027 World Cup, others feel that it's time to retire and create for the future. All the hue and cry notwithstanding, Kohli and Rohit are still eyeing the Australia tour. Their shows down there may decide if they still have a place in India's overall scheme of things or if the series will prove to be their Indian ODI farewell.
