India pacer Mohammed Siraj is likely to face a demotion in the BCCI central contract list due to his recent exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad. Currently placed in Grade A, Siraj has been a key figure in India's red-ball setup, but his limited involvement in white-ball cricket could impact his contract status. As per BCCI’s policy, players excelling across all formats are preferred in the top A+ and A categories. With Shubman Gill and KL Rahul expected to be promoted, and Hardik Pandya along with Mohammed Shami likely to be retained, Siraj’s place appears uncertain. The Hyderabad pacer was overlooked for the Champions Trophy despite being fit, with selectors opting for Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana instead. His omission raised eyebrows, especially since he played the Ranji Trophy after returning from Australia. While Siraj remains a crucial asset in Tests, his white-ball performances have not been up to expectations, which could lead to his demotion in the central contract rankings. He was India’s second most-used bowler after Jasprit Bumrah, proving his worth in the longest format. However, his form in ODIs and T20Is has been underwhelming. In 2024, he managed just three wickets in ODIs and two in T20Is across six matches, failing to make a strong impact. His struggles were evident during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he failed to provide adequate support to Bumrah. Following a disappointing performance in Australia, Siraj was dropped from the ODI series against England and eventually missed out on the Champions Trophy selection. In the squad selection press conference, the India skipper explained that Siraj's skills and techniques do not match the necessity of Dubai conditions. Harshit Rana was selected as the third pacer in the team. With BCCI set to announce the new central contracts after the Champions Trophy, Siraj’s white-ball future remains uncertain. While his test place is secured, the lack of significant contributions in shorter formats could see him slip down the contract pecking order.
