The Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer was at his top form when he suffered from a life-threatening spleen injury on October 25 in the third ODI against Australia. While his availability looms for the upcoming New Zealand series, Iyer has reportedly been recovering faster than expected. Notably, Iyer toured Australia as the vice captain of the side. At Sydney, he landed awkwardly while taking a stunner of Alex Carey off Ahrshit Rana. Shreyas was soon taken to a hospital in Sydney as his vitals dropped and he went unconscious. He was released after a week and was advised to do light exercises on reaching India. Iyer has reportedly started light exercises for almost 10 days now and has been posting on his Instagram as well. Shreyas has also started his training and has been reporting at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) nets in Mumbai. The good news is that. he batted for a full net session for almost 30 to 45 minutes and reported no discomfort. An IANS report said, "Even after batting yesterday, he was reported to be okay and has been feeling better about himself. There were no indications of pain or anything else." According to IANS sources, Shreyas Iyer travelled to Bengaluru on Thursday to report to the BCCI Centre on Excellence on the same. The IANS report on Thursday said, "Today, Iyer will report to CoE, as he flew to Bengaluru from Mumbai earlier in the day. As of now, there's no clarity on how many days he will spend there. It might take about four to six days for the medical team to assess him thoroughly." It added, “After that, the CoE will decide the further course of action and set clear timelines in terms of his total recovery and likelihood of being match fit." Well, whether he will play against new Zealand or not is still uncertain. The series will be starting this January, but before that he might be representing Mumbai in the Vijay hazare Trophy 2025-26, only if CoE stamps him as match-fit. The report further said that there is a high chance that Shreyas might come straight to IPL as the captain of Punjab Kings in the 2026 IPL. "If it's felt that his total recovery requires more time, then Iyer can be told to come back for another assessment after either 10 days or one week. After that, if he's deemed match fit, he could play Vijay Hazare Trophy games for Mumbai. But if that doesn't happen, he might play straightaway in IPL 2026, where he captains Punjab Kings."
