India's newly appointed vice captain Rishabh Pant has drawn unwanted attention from the International Cricket Council after throwing the ball at on-field umpire Paul Reiffel's face as the latter refused to change the ball. Such audacious behavior might land Rishabh in some unwanted trouble that might land him with some demerit points or, probably, a ban for one match. Here is all you need to know regarding the ICC rules and regulations on what happens if a player refuses to abide by the umpire's words. What Pant did can align with two sections in ICC's rule books. Article 2.8 deals with “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.” Clause (a): Applies to cases of clear and excessive frustration. Clause (h): Covers instances of extended or aggressive conversations with the umpire. Article 2.9 addresses the act of “throwing a ball at or near an umpire in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner.” Both articles fall under Level 1 or Level 2 offences, which may result in fines, demerit points, or, in more serious scenarios, a short suspension. While Pant didn’t seem to deliberately target the umpire with the ball, the ICC might view his backhanded throw and abrupt walk-off as an unsuitable expression of dissent. Notably, the ICC has not released an official statement yet, and any action is expected after the match. Considering Pant’s reaction was emotional but not aggressive, he is more likely to face a Level 1 sanction, such as a warning or a fine, instead of a severe punishment. In the past, comparable incidents have typically resulted in minor penalties, especially when there's no clear intent to harm or offend an umpire. Still, the ICC might respond to uphold standards of behavior, especially since Pant holds a leadership role. Rishabh Pant, known for his happy-go-lucky nature, got fumed after the umpire denied changing the ball. On Day 3 at Headingley, at around the 61st over, Rishabh Pant got frustrated with the ball. it happened right after Harry Brook ramped Mohammed Siraj's ball over the slips for a boundary. Pant along with Siraj and later Jasprit Bumrah, was seen urging the umpire to alter it. Rishabh was seen repeatedly showing a side just beside the seam, hoping that they suggested the ball's shape has been distorted. Even, Paul checked it using the ball-gauge, and the ball passed through it easily. And he refused to listen to the players. Rishabh, getting frustrated, literally took the ball and threw it behind him with the umpire standing right in front of him. With a bit of disruption, Brook who was given life more than three times, ultimately departed on 99, in an over next to it.
