The Australian skipper Pat Cummins is uncertain about his availability for the third Ashes Test in Melbourne, on December 26. Cummins took a total of six wickets in Adelaide after missing the first two Tests. Notably, this was Cummins' first Test after four and a half months after recovering from his back injury. Since the start of the Ashes, his availability has been uncertain since the start, with Steve Smith leading the side. Australia has already won the first two Tests and has retained the Ashes after sealing an 85-run victory against England. At such a scenario, Pat Cummins is uncertain about whether he will be able to play the Boxing Day Test. Speaking to the press, he said, "I'm feeling really good, [but] as for the rest of the series we'll wait and see. We had a pretty aggressive build-up knowing that it's the Ashes there to be won and we thought that was worth it. Now that the series has been won, there might be a sense of job's done and let's reassess the risk." He further added, "We'll work it out over the next couple of days, I doubt I'll be playing Melbourne, and then we'll have a chat about Sydney. But certainly before the series it was, while the series was live, let's take on the risk and have a crack at it, now it's done, I think we'll need to have a chat about it." Jamie Smith and Will Jacks briefly teased England with hopes of a miracle chase, but Australia always had enough runs to defend, even after losing Nathan Lyon to a hamstring injury that could rule him out of the series. Mitchell Starc set the tone on the final day with three wickets, including Jacks, caught brilliantly by Marnus Labuschagne at first slip, before Scott Boland wrapped things up. For Cummins, the win carried extra weight after a testing build-up. At the match presentation, Cummins said, “It feels pretty awesome. Amazing. It’s a series we’ve been thinking about for a long time. It wasn’t easy today, but we got it done.” The Australian skipper highlighted his team’s ability to grind and absorb pressure. “You can’t rush things in Australia. It’s old-fashioned toil,” he said, praising the group’s response to setbacks like Lyon’s injury. Reflecting on his own return, Cummins added: “The last two months have been a grind, but it’s all worth it on days like this — a packed crowd and retaining the Ashes.”
