After the Annual General Meeting in Singapore in July, the International Cricket Council has finally gotten settled with the qualification scenario for the Olympics. As per a report from The Guardian, the ICC has decided to proceed with a continent-based qualification system. It means the top-ranked team from the concerned continent or region will qualify for the 2028 LA Olympics. The report says, "It has been proposed that the top-ranked team in Asia, Oceania, Europe and Africa qualify automatically, along with the USA, who would represent the Americas. That would have implications for West Indian islands hoping to compete." The very first question for Pakistan is, where do they exist? Pakistan is ranked eighth in the latest ICC T20 rankings. It is in the third position when it comes to the Asian countries. Sri Lanka lies seventh, and India tops the entire chart, sitting at number 1. For Oceania, Australia sits at number two. It will be too gutsy to predict three years before the Olympics that New Zealand will be kicked out, as the Kiwis are number four. Well, both New Zealand and Pakistan seemed to unhappy with the proceeding. Despite being the host nation, the United States risks missing out on participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics unless it secures recognition as a National Governing Body (NGB) from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). This recognition is mandatory under the Olympic Charter for a country to compete in the Games. The USA had made headlines during the 2024 T20 World Cup, reaching the Super Eight stage and pulling off a major upset by defeating Pakistan in the group phase. As for the women’s event, qualification will be decided based on results from the T20 World Cup scheduled for next year.
