England lost the opening two ODIs of the five-match series against Australia but bounced back with a win in the third one. Despite so, some of the players were seen struggling to cope with the format, and that's a worrying sign, keeping the Champions Trophy 2025 in mind. With so many senior players being out-of-action through either injury or retirement—Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, and Chris Woakes, to name but England have insisted on selecting a young side that hasn't played much cricket together. Speaking on the same, Will Jacks said that the players haven't played much 50-over cricket lately and found it hard to maintain tempo. He said the format does not get played too often, which has troubled their growth. The schedule only allows what it allows and that's for people above us (to determine). We just go where we're told. I think when you're leading up to a major event, you are going to play more but with the way TV is now… that's out of our control,” Jacks was quoted as saying by The Mirror. “This is our first time together as a squad so it's going to take time to get there but we're progressing every game and hopefully when we come back next time we'll be one step further,” he added. Most importantly, Jacks played a match-winning innings of 84 runs in the third ODI that England won against Australia by 46 runs (DLS method). He and captain Harry Brook had developed a crucial partnership of 156 runs that decided the outcome of the match. With that brilliant knock, Jacks has almost secured a place in the ODI team and will play a crucial role in the middle order in the remaining matches also.
