The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly stated that there are no discussions happening about replacing Gautam Gambhir with VVS Laxman as the head coach for the Test team. This clarification comes on the heels of reports suggesting that Gambhir’s position was under threat after India faced a 2-0 defeat against South Africa earlier this year. While it was previously mentioned that Laxman wasn’t keen on stepping into the role, the board has now confirmed that they have no intention of making a change. According to news agency ANI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed the board's full confidence in Gambhir, assuring that he will continue to lead the Indian cricket team as their Test coach. He dismissed any claims that the board had reached out to Laxman, either officially or unofficially, to gauge his interest in taking over the coaching duties for the longest format of the game. “The reports currently circulating are entirely inaccurate and purely speculative. Despite being carried by some reputed media outlets, there is no truth to these claims. The BCCI categorically denies them and has taken no such steps. These reports are based on conjecture and imagination, are factually incorrect, and completely baseless,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told ANI. India’s Test Future Hinges on Gambhir Since Gambhir took the reins in July 2024, India has faced 10 losses, including staggering 5 defeats at home against SENA nations. This includes two historic series losses to New Zealand and South Africa. Earlier reports suggested that the BCCI had once again contacted VVS Laxman to see if he would consider stepping in as the Test head coach, especially after Rahul Dravid's departure in June 2024. Laxman had turned down the opportunity then and has reiterated his disinterest now. The report also indicates that whether Laxman might be interested in the Test coach position in the future could hinge on India’s performance at the T20 World Cup 2026. Gambhir’s contract is set to expire after the 2027 ODI World Cup, but his future could very well depend on how India fares in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The BCCI seems uncertain about whether Gambhir is the right fit to lead the Test team, especially with 9 matches left in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
