India has been a regular in the finals of the both the WTC cycles that too against the tough teams like New Zealand and Australia. However, they lost both those finals. Recently, after winning the series 2-0 over Bangladesh, hope was high, but losing the first Test against New Zealand raised a concern about the ability to reach the WTC finals again. Things, however, aren't exactly very rosy for the Indian camp in the live action of the second Test at Pune. Despite limiting New Zealand to just 259 runs, they simply folded like a pack of cards before New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner as he single-handedly rattled the Indian innings by taking seven wickets and helping his teammates bowl out India for just 156 runs. Questions over India's WTC prospects are getting louder if they lose the Pune Test. India still leads the WTC standings in spite of having played 13 matches so far. They have won eight, lost four, and drawn one, which gives them a PCT of 62.82 and 98 points. Australia is closely following at second, with the same number of wins but a lower PCT of 62.50 and 90 points. They are currently visiting Bangladesh for a Test series and then hosting Sri Lanka and Pakistan. If they manage to get good results against these teams it would leave the door wide open to make it their first WTC final. Still, India do have an opportunity to reach the third successive WTC final. They need to win at least three of their six remaining matches in this cycle to ensure a spot for themselves. Barring some aberration, it will be mistake to write off India, as they gear up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia post the third Test against New Zealand at home.
