The Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant missing out on ODI captaincy is a current matter of discussion. The Board of Cricket Control in India has announced the ODI squad for the South Africa series on November 23. In the series, KL Rahul has been given the responsibility for the team in the absence of captain Shubman Gill and vice captain Shreyas Iyer. Even though Shreyas' comeback looks distant, Shubman will be back by early next year, before the New Zealand series starts. In such a situation, BCCI wanted a short-term commitment, and KL Rahul looked like the right man for them. Explaining about Rishabh Pant's case, he has played only one ODI in the calendar year, which doesn't suit him for the captaincy. Well, he has captaincy experience not just in the Indian Premier League but also in 5 T20 Internationals. Currently, Rishabh is leading the Indian Test team against South Africa in the second Test at Guwahati in the absence of Gill. A source close to BCCI said to PTI, "Rahul’s captaincy is a one-off and should be seen in isolation. Rishabh (Pant) wasn’t considered, as he has played only one ODI game in the last one year. The selectors expect that Shubman Gill’s neck injury will heal and he will be back against New Zealand (3 ODIs in January 2026)." Notably, India will play three ODI matches against South Africa after the ongoing Test series. The first ODI will start on November 30, at Ranchi. Raipur will host the second ODI on December 3, with Vishakapattanam hosting the third on December 6.
