The Indian star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has joined hours before the final squad of the Champions Trophy was announced, and shockingly, he was declared "okay" by the medical team. But BCCI did not want to risk him and avoid any further embarrassments and dropped him from the squad. Apart from the bowling skills, Jasprit Bumrah's injury became the talk of the town considering his participation in India's upcoming event, the ICC Champions Trophy, starting on February 19. Jasprit Bumrah sustained a back strain during the toiling Border Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. He had to leave the field midway at Sydney for scans. Since then, he has been out of play. At around February 10, he joined the National Cricket Academy and was gradually increasing his workload. According to PTI's latest report, Bumrah has completed his rehab and scans are fine, but it remains uncertain if he’ll be fit to bowl when the tournament starts. Bumrah underwent five weeks of offloading, followed by rehab at NCA under trainer Rajnikanth and physio Thulasi. NCA head Nitin Patel's report stated that while rehabilitation and scans are positive, it’s unclear if he’ll be match-fit in time. As a result, selectors decided not to take the risk without full medical clearance, leaving the decision to chief selector Agarkar. A BCCI source said the PTI, "Bumrah was asked to off-load for five weeks after which his rehabilitation at NCA happened under strength & conditioning trainer Rajnikanth and physio Thulasi. The report sent by NCA head Nitin Patel clearly states that while he has completed his rehabilitation and scan reports seemed to be okay, it couldn't be concluded whether he would be bowling fit by the time the tournament starts. Hence the selectors didn't take any risks. Nitin left the ball in Ajit's (chief selector Agarkar) court and hence no one would want to stick their necks out and take the risk of putting an unfit player in squad. If medical team doesn't green-light fully, how can the selection committee take that risk." Chief selector Ajit Agarkar didn't want to risk a similar situation, opting to bring in Harshit instead. The official added, "The stakes are too high and it would have been a complete embarrassment had Bumrah broken down in a match. The NCA led by Nitin Patel had once burnt their hands in 2022 when they pushed Bumrah for the bilateral series against Australia before the T20 World Cup and he had broken down to be out for one year. That was Chetan Sharma's committee, and so Agarkar didn't want to take a chance." BCCI submitted the final squad list with another major change. The spinner Varun Chakravarthy has walked in to the team as a replacement for Yashasvi Jaiswal. India will depart for the Champions Trophy on February 15.
