Rohit Sharma's stint as India's ODI captain has come to an official end. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has presented the captaincy reins to young opener Shubman Gill, heralding a new era in Indian cricket. Gill also replaced Rohit as the Test captain prior to the England series after Rohit retired from the longest version of the game. Rohit, who guided India to the final of ODI World Cup 2023 and subsequently to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title, will now play ODIs primarily as he targets a spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Together with Rohit, experienced Virat Kohli is also in the same situation, having quit Tests and T20Is. Both cricketers are yet to ascertain whether they will play till the 2027 World Cup. Rumors have it that they intend to play several series before making their decision. Why BCCI Removed Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain The primary reason for the captaincy shift was uncertainty over Rohit's inclusion in the 2027 ODI World Cup. With his selection not assured owing to restricted cricket in the coming years, the BCCI deemed it wise to make a long-term leader. BCCI Selectors Chairman Ajit Agarkar endorsed the move, citing it was necessary to plan ahead for 2027. Agarkar said: “It's practically impossible to have three different captains for three different formats — at some stage we have to start thinking about 2027." Having this in mind, Gill's appointment allows him sufficient time to develop and mature into the captaincy and establish a solid team for the future. Also Read | "Garandhiya" in Premadasa Stadium!
