The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 became a major topic of discussion even before the tournament started after organizers introduced a controversial rule for overseas players. The tournament introduced new eligibility rules for draft players from different categories through an announcement made earlier this week. The overseas players had to meet social media follower targets in addition to their cricket performances and experience requirements. Overseas players needed to have minimum social media followers according to the main rules which required Icon and Star players to have 250000 followers. Gold category players needed to have 150000 followers whereas Classic category players needed to possess what organizers termed as "commercial appeal and fan engagement." The announcement quickly spread online through social media platforms as cricket fans expressed their confusion regarding the connection between online fame and actual cricket career advancement. Fans And Experts Criticized The Decision The rule received strong criticism from fans and former players and cricket followers across different platforms. Many people felt that cricket selections should depend only on performances and skills and records instead of Instagram popularity. Fans also pointed out that players are often advised to stay away from social media distractions and focus more on their game. Some supporters showed that talented cricketers avoid online presence because they prefer to improve their playing abilities. The rule prevented experienced T20 players from receiving opportunities despite their successful performances in domestic and franchise cricket worldwide. Many people described the rule as unnecessary and unfair and it became the main topic of discussion throughout the week. Explained Organizers Remove Followers Requirement The LPL organizers and Sri Lanka Cricket decided to remove the social media followers condition from the updated regulations after they faced heavy online criticism. Azzam Ameen reported on X that the controversial rule had officially been removed according to his report as a Sri Lankan journalist. The decision brought relief to many cricket fans who believed the original system would have damaged the reputation of the tournament. The franchise leagues around the world have marketed their games to engage fans yet supporters still believe cricketers should be chosen based on their cricket skills during the selection process. LPL 2026 Schedule And Tournament History The Lanka Premier League started in 2020 with five teams representing different regions of Sri Lanka. The first season featured Jaffna Stallions, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Vikings, Colombo Kings, and Kandy Tuskers. The tournament has grown into the largest domestic T20 event of Sri Lanka throughout its development. The Jaffna franchise has been the most successful team in the league's history after winning three titles. The 2026 edition of the tournament will take place from July 10 to August 5. The matches will occur at four locations throughout Sri Lanka which include SSC and R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and the Pallekele and Dambulla grounds. Organizers hope for a problem-free tournament after they already confronted controversy before the first match of the season started.
