Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter and selector, Saba Karim, has criticised the BCCI’s decision to remove Rohit Sharma from ODI captaincy, especially after he won the Champions Trophy in March this year. Karim also questioned management’s long-term planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new skipper of the Indian team for this Australia series. Karim, who has previously served as the national selector of the team, questioned the place of Rohit Sharma in the ODI squad, citing that he may not be in the 2027 ODI World Cup plans. He also described the decision as unnecessary. Speaking on his YouTube channel KADAK, Karim said: "Team mein aap kyon rakh rahe hain?” (Why are you keeping him in the team?) Karim questioned. “Agar woh captain nahin hain to phir ek baat saaf hai na ki aap unka future dekh nahi rahe ki wo 2027 ke World Cup mein rahenge, to phir aap aise khiladi ko team mein nahin rakhiye jo aapko lagta hain ki 2027 mein aapke hisaab se maujood nahin rahenge,” Karim added. (If he is not captaining, then it is clear that you don’t see his future. You don’t feel that he will be a part of the 2027 World Cup. So, don’t keep a player whom you don’t feel would be a part of the 2027 World Cup.)" The former Indian cricketer also acknowledged that Shubman Gill could become India’s all-format captain soon. He has the potential to serve as India’s captain and fulfil the role perfectly. Now that you have made him captain, the thought is that very soon, maybe by the next season, we will see Shubman Gill leading in all three formats. Looking at it this way, their thinking seems correct. They feel that there is no other capable leader, and that’s why they are pushing Shubman at this time. He has also shown good captaincy, performing well in Test cricket. Now we will see how he does in ODIs, but yes, he has the capabilities to become a captain.” The first ODI of the three-match series between India and Australia will be played at Perth Stadium on October 19.
