Star India batter Karun Nair, who made a highly-publicized return to international cricket recently in the five-Test series against England, has not been selected in the India A team for the four-day games against Australia A later this month. Nair last played for India in the fifth Test at The Oval, where the right-hander scored a crucial half-century in the first innings. Despite his knock, the series as a whole was not very impressive for him, as he managed mere 205 runs in eight innings with a single fifty. This performance has left his place in the Indian squad for the upcoming West Indies series uncertain. Injury and Domestic Concerns Nair had returned from Vidarbha to Karnataka prior to the new domestic season. But he was not included in the South Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, even though he's one of the most consistent red-ball cricketers in the zone. It is said that he suffered an injury while batting during the England Test, which ruled him out of the Maharaja Trophy too. The Ranji Trophy starts on October 15, and the announcement of Karnataka's team will indicate his fitness levels and chances of selection. For Nair, the England series meant a lot as it was a full circle in his career. He had once begged for "another chance" amidst a dismal spell four years ago. His comeback was formed on grit, performances in England village leagues, a brief turn in county cricket, and regular domestic runs. Though his return to the Indian team was much looked forward to, the modest performance against England indicate he has still to do some work to earn a permanent spot. The upcoming Ranji Trophy season will determine his future course of action.
