Sponsors play a massive role behind the Indian cricketing structure. Dream11, who had paid INR 35 crores to the Indian team as their title sponsor and had a deal till 2026 has been officially terminated by BCCI after the Indian government issued the Online Gaming Regulatory Bill, 2025. With the bill banning all real money games, the entire business model of Dream11 naturally collapsed. However, Dream11's premature exit can't make BCCI propel the company a fine or or other penalties. How is Dream11 saved? The deal between Dream11 and BCCI had an explicit “force majeure,” or legal impossibility, clause stating that if any new law prevents Dream11 from operating its business, it would not be liable for continuing the sponsorship or paying penalties. Reports suggested that Dream11 representatives visited the BCCI's office at Mumbai and pleaded with the BCCI CEO to terminate the contract. On Thursday, BCCI's interim secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the termination and said ANI, “BCCI and Dream 11 are discontinuing their relationship after the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was passed. BCCI will ensure not to indulge with any such organizations ahead in the future." The Regulatory Context Recently the Indian government has passed the Online Gaming Bill that prohibits all real-money online games, including fantasy sports involving monetary stakes. This law also bans their advertising, promotion, and sponsorship. It will cause 3 years of imprisonment for the server or a INR 1 crore fine. For advertisers, they will have pay INR 50 Lakhs or suffer 2 years in the jail. Founded in 2008, Dream11was based mainly on real money games, that got legalized nationwide by the Supreme court despite several state bans like those in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka. With the national bill coming in 2025, Dream11 finally collapses.
