With Rohit Sharma no longer playing Test cricket, the team must find a new red-ball captain. Reports suggest that the BCCI thinks that Shubman Gill will be the new captain for Team India. This strongly suggests that Jasprit Bumrah, who last led India in Tests, will not be in contention. According to reports, The BCCI has concerns about Bumrah being able to take on leadership responsibilities. They believe Bumrah will be under too much pressure and push himself physically too hard - particularly given the injuries he had in the past. We remember the instance of Bumrah collapsing in Australia when he was captaining that squad. When it comes to performing well in England, India will need the best version of Bumrah and possibly giving him the captaincy could put that in jeopardy; therefore, Gill is the more practical option. Gill is the vice captain in white ball and leads the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He is now 25 and going into the best phase of his career. If Bumrah is fit then Ishant believes he should captain the side. Ishant plays under Gill at GT, but prefers Bumrah as captain. He does suggest, however, that if the BCCI believe Bumrah may not be fit for all five Tests in England, he believes Gill would be an appropriate choice to take charge. Ishant said on Star Sports Press Room: “If Bumrah is fit, I would say Bumrah. That’s the first choice. He is the only one who has so much experience. But if he won’t play all five Test matches, then obviously Shubman.”
