In Match 22 of IPL 2025 between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings, CSK opener Devon Conway was retired out after making 69 off 49 balls in a 220 run-chase. Conway was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja at the crease who eventually finished with 9* off 5 balls as CSK went on to lose the match by 18 runs. CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad defended the move of retiring out Conway and had this to say in the post-match conference - "He (Conway) is more of a timer of the ball, very useful up the order. When you have Jaddu, known for that (finishing) role particularly, you expect that. When you know the batter is struggling…initially he (Conway) was still timing it well. We waited and waited until (he started struggling)." Conway becomes the second player to be retired out in this season after the infamous decision of MI to retire out Tilak Verma against LSG a few days back. All the five batters to have been retired out have been Indians, interestingly. Here is the list of batters who have been retired out in the IPL: R Ashwin (RR) vs LSG, Wankhede, 2022 Atharva Taide (PBKS) vs DC, Dharamshala, 2023 Sai Sudharsan (GT) vs MI, Ahmedabad, 2023 Tilak Varma (MI) vs LSG, Lucknow, 2025 Devon Conway (CSK) vs PBKS, Mullanpur, 2025 (today) Just like the decision to retire out Tilak in the MI game, this decision to retire out Conway did not really pay dividends and the move received mixed reactions from the fans. While some hailed it as the right move as Conway was struggling to get going and CSK were in need of some big hits, some felt that a set batter would have been a better bet instead of an entirely new batter.
