Bangladesh is currently hosting Pakistan in a three-match ODI series. The hosts thrashed the visitors by a commanding 8-wicket victory in the series opener on Wednesday. This victory came at a time when Bangladesh needed it the most; they defeated Pakistan in ODIs after 7 years. Their last victory had come in the 2018 Asia Cup tournament, which was held in the UAE. While bowling first in the first ODI match, Bangladeshi bowlers were hitting the nerves of Pakistani batters. At a minefield surface like Shere Bangla Stadium, pacers extracted good help from the surface. While Nahid Rana was clinching regular wickets from one end, Mehidy Hasan Miraz kept the momentum going with his spin. The 23-year old speedster showcased his ability, scalping 5 wickets for just 24 runs in his bowling spell. He grabbed one wicket in his first five overs. While the skipper, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, also took three wickets to his name, bowling out the Pakistan team for just 114 runs. This also marked their 5th-lowest total against Bangladesh in ODIs. Najmul Hossain Shanto also played a good cameo, scoring 27 runs. With a 1-0 lead in the series already, Bangladesh will be desperately eyeing to seal the ODI series. Their last ODI series victory against Pakistan came in 2015 under the leadership of Azhar Ali, where they whitewashed them with a 3-0 margin. Bangladesh has seen many changes in their recent cricket. They have been constantly surrounded by many controversies. They were removed from the 2026 T20 World Cup tournament after opting to back out at the last moment; they were replaced by Scotland. This victory would not only have boosted their morale but would also have empowered them to go for the clean sweep, considering the 2027 ODI World Cup is drawing near. Earlier, Bangladesh had defeated the West Indies 2- 1 in the three-match series, winning both matches at the same Shere Bangla Stadium.
