Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 season opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. While CSK's Rachin Ravindra and spinner Noor Ahmad played pivotal roles in the victory, it was MI's Vignesh Puthur who stole the spotlight. The 24-year-old spinner from Kerala, with no prior senior-level T20 experience, became an internet sensation after claiming three quick wickets in the middle overs. Just when it seemed CSK had the chase under control, Vignesh brought MI back into the contest. However, Rachin Ravindra ensured CSK crossed the line, sealing a four-wicket win. After the match, MS Dhoni was seen chatting with the young spinner, a moment that quickly went viral. Sreerag also mentioned how Vignesh’s family was overwhelmed by his performance. Despite his inexperience at the senior T20 level, he bowled with remarkable composure against the CSK batters. "From the very first ball, he never looked like he was under pressure. It was impressive to see how he handled the situation," MI bowling coach Paras Mhambrey told ESPNCricinfo. Mhambrey further explained that Vignesh's impressive performance in training, where he troubled top MI batters like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, gave the team confidence to field him in the season opener. "When Rohit, Surya, and Tilak batted against him, they found it challenging. That gave us the assurance to back him in this game," Mhambrey added. Mumbai Indians will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Gujarat Titans on March 29.
