The ongoing form of Shreyas Iyer has created a huge buzz regarding not being selected in the Indian Team. Even though he has established himself as fit for at least the two forms of cricket, the ODI and the Tests, being the first choice in the team is something he is struggling with. Following a stunning performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy, his exclusion from the Indian squad for the England Test series raised questions. Earlier, chief selector Ajit Agarkar was approached with the question, to which he reasoned that Iyer is not yet well equipped for red ball cricket. And now, during the pre-Test pressy on Thursday, June 5, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was asked the same question. In the press conference, while Gambhir was asked about Shreyas' future, Gambhir replied with diplomacy. He clarified that the team's door is open for whoever performs. Gambhir said, “Anyone can be called. Anyone can be called if they are in good form. We could only pick 18, and the chairman of the selection committee has already answered that question (why Iyer was not picked). For me, it’s always about being open to people who are in good form, who can come in and deliver." He was told to participate in the Ranji Trophy, but he denied it, reasoning his back spasms, and that cost him his BCCI Central Contract. However, Shreyas Iyer was the third-highest run-getter for the team in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He had amassed 530 runs, the first ever Indian to surpass 500 runs batting at number 4. Iyer was on his painkiller injections and had right away visited the KKR academy to build his workload. Even the Mumbai state board was keeping track of his fitness. However, the fact that he denied his participation in a Ranji match triggered the BCCI. Nevertheless, he went on to win a series of domestic trophies and the 2024 IPL too for Kolkata Knight Riders. Thereafter, in early 2025, he scored 181 runs in the ODI series against England despite not being the first choice in the team. Following that, in the Champions Trophy 2025, he was the second highest scorer of the tournament, scoring 243 runs. For the Punjab Kings in 2025 IPL, Shreyas amassed 604 runs with six half centuries, but a casual shot in the final match against Romario Shepherd made him stand on the runners-up's side.
