In the 10th match of the 2024 Marsh Cup between Western Australia and Tasmania, an unusual incident unfolded as Western Australia's batting lineup was dismantled in what felt like the blink of an eye. Western Australia’s innings started with an early setback when they lost Aaron Hardie, but D’Arcy Short and Cameron Bancroft managed to settle things down for a bit. The pair stitched together a 35-run partnership, giving the team a glimmer of hope for a decent total. Soon after, Bancroft fell at 52, triggering a dramatic collapse that saw Western Australia lose their next seven wickets for just one additional run, ending their innings at a paltry 53. The team recorded six ducks, rounding off a disappointing display with the bat. Tasmania’s Beau Webster led the attack, claiming six wickets for just 17 runs in his six-over spell. This collapse set an unfortunate record for Western Australia, marking their lowest-ever score in the one-day cup, beating the previous 59-run all-out against Victoria at the MCG in 1969. Only once before in the tournament's history had a state team been dismissed for fewer runs, with Tasmania bowling out an opponent for 51 in Hobart in 2003. Western Australia will have another shot at redemption when they face Tasmania in a Sheffield Shield game at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval on November 1.
