The Cricket West Indies has announced that seven young cricketers from the West Indies have been assigned to undergo intense two-week specialized training at the Chennai Super Kings Academy. Among the seven players, three of them—Kirk McKenzie, Matthew Nandu, and Kevin Wickham—are contracted with franchises. Former West Indies Under-19 players Jordan Johnson and Ackeem Auguste, and current and former West Indies Academy players Teddy Bishop and Jewel Andrew are the other four players assigned for the training. With the players, Ramesh Subasinghe, the head coach in the West Indies Academy, and assistant coach Rohan Nurse will board for India on November 29. Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, said: “The Chennai Academy will host these seven batsmen and aim to equip them with skills and experience in navigating spinning conditions. Our coaches will be on hand to ensure that the learnings in the period can be consolidated and extended to other players in the region through the academy.” At the CSK Academy, the players will play a two-day match and another three white-ball fixtures as part of their training. CSK's Academy Director Sriram Krishnamurthy will be there, apart from experienced coaches from the team. The training will commence on December 1 and will cntinue till 14. Barbados Pride's Kevin Wickham, one of the enlisted players for the training, outshone, soring 276 runs with a top score of 118 not out in the CG United Super50 Cup 2024. The U-19 players Jordan Johnson and Ackeem Auguste have also shown their potential in regional cricket. Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, shared CWI’s approval of the initiative, saying, “CWI is committed to providing opportunities for our emerging players in overseas conditions. In this case, the Chennai Academy will host these seven batsmen and aim to equip them with skills and experience in navigating spinning conditions. Our coaches will be on hand to ensure that the learnings in the period can be consolidated and extended to other players in the region through the academy.” Apart from technical skills, the training session will also focus on developing mental resilience and cultural awareness among the players, necessary for adapting to international cricket.
