Bengaluru, the city itself is still sort of trying to recover from the stampede tragedy outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, during RCB’s IPL title celebration. After that really heartbreaking incident , the authorities are, at least now, starting to move and take action. For years, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has stayed like the very pulse of cricket in Bengaluru. It’s RCB’s home base in the IPL, and on top of that, the Maharaja Trophy is held there fairly often too. However, since the stampede happened, the stadium has had trouble keeping its hosting rights. The reason is basically the rising worries around safety, the needed infrastructure and the way crowds are managed , everything. To deal with all of this, the Karnataka government has officially declared a big new cricket stadium project. If it goes as planned, it could turn into India’s second-largest venue, only after the Narendra Modi Stadium. Reports suggest that the international stadium will come up on 75 acres in Anekal near Bannerghatta National Park, or at least thats what officials are saying. The whole project is expected to also bring a sports complex along with it, and it could comfortably accommodate nearly 80,000 spectators. The estimated cost is around ₹943 crore, so yes that’s the ballpark figure, and authorities believe the construction work will finish within the next few years. If it is completed the way they’re planning, the new Bengaluru stadium will end up as the country’s second-largest cricket ground, right after the Narendra Modi Stadium, which can host about 90,000 fans. After that, the city gets another world-class cricket facility, something that can host more IPL matches, ICC tournaments, concerts, and big athletic events with ease. Meanwhile, Karnataka chief minister D. K. Shivakumar and senior leader Siddaramaiah laid the foundation stone for the ambitious project, kinda. The state government has clarified that taxpayer money will not directly fund the stadium. Instead authorities plan to bring in funds through Karnataka Housing Board land auctions. Officials have also claimed that nearby land prices have already climbed up after the announcement happened, right away. Still, the project has a big concern about where it will come up. The proposed site falls close to the eco-sensitive zone of Bannerghatta National Park . So environmental worries have surfaced, and reports say the whole thing is currently pending before the Supreme Court. This new stadium push is coming in a moment when the Chinnaswamy Stadium continues to face criticism for poor safety arrangements following the IPL 2025 stampede tragedy. On top of that, RCB played only a limited number of home matches in Bengaluru. Raipur meanwhile served as the franchise’s second home venue, in a sort of split arrangement, which wasn’t ideal. In another setback, Chinnaswamy Stadium also lost the hosting rights for the IPL 2026 final. This happened after disagreements with the BCCI and the IPL governing council, which left things a little stalled. No doubt about it, Bengaluru needed major improvements in its cricket infrastructure. And this upcoming stadium could play a huge role, in transforming the city’s sporting future, for real.
