Cricket officials of the World Cricket Association (WCA) have requested Bangladesh Premier League authorities to clear their pending amounts due to foreign cricketers who had played in the recently concluded season. According to Cricbuzz, WCA (formerly known as FICA), which is an international body for cricketing nations, representing cricketers from top-cricket playing nations through its domestic bodies issued a formal letter to the governing board of BPL appealing against the non-payment issue. Tom Moffat, the WCA chief executive, said: "A significant number of late and non-payment issues have been reported to us with respect to the last BPL event, and most of them remain outstanding. This is a broader ongoing issue across our whole sport and it is disappointing these issues continue to be reported." He added: "We continue to urge the game's leadership to step in and ensure they are resolved and the players are paid what they are owed urgently." At least 15 foreign players have reportedly complained about unpaid dues from last BPL season amounting to some USD 250,000. Apparently, one of the franchises from last season will not make it this season and reportedly owes around USD 100,000. Teams participated last season but sitting out this season are Comilla Victorians, Chattogram Challengers, and Durdanto Dhaka. Sylhet Strikers, Khulna Tigers, Rangpur Riders, and the current champions Fortune Barishal will remain in the league. Another team that played for the first two seasons of BPL, Chittagong Kings, will return after an 11-year break. Two new teams will enter the league this season: Dhaka Capitals and Durbar Rajshahi. Nazmul said: "That issue has been addressed and the process has started (as far as clearing them is concerned). It is handled by the CEO and he can give you the correct answer but that issue (letter from World Cricketers Association's concern) has been addressed and work is in place to solve it." In a statement, Debabrata Paul, Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh said that 12 cricketers out of the 15 were cleared by the franchises. He said: "There are three cricketers from three franchises that still did not get their payment but we are hoping they will also get back their payment soon." The new season of BPL is scheduled to start on December 30 and the final will be held on February 7. Payment delays have been a recurring problem in BPL, especially during the period under former board president Nazmul Hasan. It will be the first BPL season under a new board president, Faruque Ahmed, who also chairs the BPL governing council, and one can only wait and see how he will sort out these nagging payment issues.
