Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal registered a rare failure as he was dismissed for only 17 runs in the current unofficial Test match between India-A and England Lions in Northampton. Experienced English pace bowler Chris Woakes dismissed Jaiswal by bowling an in-ducking delivery that set him up in front of the stumps. Batting for India-A, Jaiswal came in with confidence but was unable to turn his beginning into a substantial score. The scene occurred during the seventh over of India-A's innings. England Lions skipper James Rew had also won the toss and elected to bowl first. Introducing Woakes for another overturned out to be the good decision. From around the wicket, Woakes bowled the ball full and moved it back in hard. Jaiswal attempted a flick shot but failed, and the ball hit him on the front pad. Woakes and the fielders went for the appeal, and the umpire promptly raised his finger. He obviously believed the ball could have been marginally short of the leg stump. The left-hander remained at the crease for a couple of seconds, looking up at the umpire, before eventually trudging back to the pavilion. His body language expressed that he was not certain about the decision, and he was extremely agitated. Most fans and experts believed that had DRS (Decision Review System) been in place, Jaiswal could have survived. The replays indicated his off and middle stumps were clearly visible, and the ball could have possibly missed leg stump. With no DRS, he could do nothing but have to take the decision. This was Jaiswal's second low score in three innings on his maiden England tour. He had scored just 24 runs in the first match but returned for a dazzling fifty in the subsequent one. His recent dismissal for 17, though, will be a cause of concern for the Indian team management to some extent, given the upcoming five-Test series against England. His technique coming in at the top of the order will be critical, and they will be looking for him to settle very quickly in English conditions.
