India's aim to disrupt England's solid opening partnership received a setback when Yashasvi Jaiswal spilled a vital catch during Day 5 of the first Test in Headingley, Leeds. On the fifth ball of 39th over, Mohammed Siraj bowled a hard short ball to Ben Duckett. The left-hander, trying to pull, top-edged high towards deep backward square-leg. Jaiswal ran in, dived forward, got both hands to it, but couldn't hold on to the catch. It was a difficult chance, but one that ought to have been held at this level. Siraj was clearly agitated, displaying his frustration as soon as the drop was made. Gautam Gambhir, sitting in the dressing room, remained motionless with an angry face. His performance is now being questioned, particularly with England pursuing a large target and appearing dominant. Duckett, who was 98* at the time, went on to score a century, making the miss all the more expensive. The partnership of Duckett and Crawley was broken by Prasidh Krishna after a short rain-interruption. Krishna dismissed Zak Crawley for 65 off 126 and soon in his next over, he also castled England vice-captain Ollie Pope (8). However, England, despite losing two back-to-back wickets, is still in a strong position with the centurion Ben Duckett and one of the finest Test batters of modern day, Joe Root at the crease. At the time of writing, England require 158 more runs with almost 50 overs in hand. India, on the other hand, need 8 more wickets to clinch the victory in the series opener.
