India's aim to disrupt England's solid opening partnership received a setback when Yashasvi Jaiswal spilled a vital catch during Day 5 of the first Test in Headingley, Leeds. On the fifth ball of 39th over, Mohammed Siraj bowled a hard short ball to Ben Duckett. The left-hander, trying to pull, top-edged high towards deep backward square-leg. Jaiswal ran in, dived forward, got both hands to it, but couldn't hold on to the catch. It was a difficult chance, but one that ought to have been held at this level. Siraj was clearly agitated, displaying his frustration as soon as the drop was made. Gautam Gambhir, sitting in the dressing room, remained motionless with a poker face. Duckett, who was 84* at the time, went on to score a century, making the miss all the more expensive. England's top order continued to produce a record partnership of 181 runs, the largest opening partnership in the fourth innings of an England home Test.
