Shubman Gill will start a new era in Indian cricket as he prepares to captain the Test team for the first time. India will play a five-match Test series against England from Friday at Headingley. During the pre-match press meet, the 25-year-old appeared relaxed and confident. He refused to say much on the plans of the team but appeared prepared for the huge assignment. With Indian greats, namely, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket last month, the spotlight is now on Gill. When asked by an English journalist if India will play in the style of England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’, Gill smiled and replied with confidence. The journalist asked: "What sort of style of play will we see under your captaincy from India? Are you inspired by what ‘bazzball’ has done for England in the last few years?” To which Shubman Gill replied with: “You're going to have to wait until August to see what kind of style it's going to be” His answer made everyone in the room laugh, including himself. KL Rahul is likely to shift back to the opener position, and the batting order gets a new look as India starts a new chapter in red-ball cricket. This series also coincides with a time when Gautam Gambhir is under pressure as the head coach. India had an underwhelming 2024–25 Test campaign as they lost six out of ten matches. This included a humiliating 0-3 home series defeat against New Zealand. As a result, India failed to make it to the World Test Championship final for the first time, ending up third in the standings. Despite being a new-look side, there is still immense support for Gill. KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, both of whom have previously captained India, will provide vital contributions to guiding the inexperienced captain. Gambhir, on the other hand, will be seeking to redeem himself and restore India to winning ways in Test cricket.
