Kohli's best phase of his Test career was between 2016 to 2019, where he notched up 4,208 runs in 43 matches at 66.79 average. Known for his ability to adapt to different conditions, Kohli became a cornerstone of India's Test batting lineup, with a career that saw him dominate across continents. Kohli also finished as India's most successful captain in this longest format. However, after a prolific start and a strong middle phase, Kohli's form dipped in recent years, and his last few seasons in Test cricket were challenging. In the 2024/25 season, He has played 10 matches and has managed to score only 382 runs at 22.47. He had one half-century and as many hundred during this phase. With both Rohit and Virat calling it a day, the selectors will have a big headache ahead of the five-match Test series against England, which starts in June. The BCCI are yet to announce the captain of the Indian team. Shubman Gill is expected to take over the Test captaincy. The squad is expected to come out in the final week of May.
