The Pakistan cricket superstar, Babar Azam, is under intense fire from the public after his below-par performance in the second T20I against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Despite being a regular in Pakistan's line-up, the 30-year-old has also recently received severe criticism, particularly after a torrid run in the 2024 season. Babar has so far played in 21 T20I matches in the year and could only muster up 666 runs with a strike rate of 132.66. His form in the T20 World Cup 2024 also recently went into a disaster. Babar Azam, under his leadership, failed to take Pakistan beyond the group stage and this frustrated their fans. The frustration seems to have reached boiling point when some fans in the stadium against Australia started chanting that Babar no longer deserves a place in the T20I team. A video from the match where fans are screaming "Teri T20 mein jagah nahin banti" (You don't deserve a place in T20) has gone viral on social media showing the growing discontent among Pakistani supporters. Earlier this year, in 2024, Babar was taken out of the Test squad following a series of inconsistent performances. Nevertheless, with Babar was still playing for Pakistan in the first Test against England, a batting collapse had already nudged him out of the middle order, and poor batting had seen him being replaced by Kamran Ghulam, who made his century on debut, and his slot looked well-set in the middle order. Against this background, Babar's prospects in Test cricket look less defined, and this provides more pressure on him to regain form. Babar Azam's form is also a cause for concern in the limited-overs game. During the ODI series against Australia, he managed just 37, 15*, and 28*. This didn't help his cause much either. He has mustered only six runs from two games so far in the T20I series. Unfortunately, Babar Azam has not been included in the series against Zimbabwe, else it could have helped him to get back in rhythm, especially with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 just around the corner.
