On February 20, during the second match of the Champions Trophy group stage, between India and Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed won hearts by letting Shubman Gill complete his century without disruptions. It happened in the second ball of the 43rd over, when Taskin gave a low short ball angling slightly outside the off stump, and Shubhman drove it with the straight bat towards the extra cover region. Shubman, batting at 99, ran a run, while the field picked the ball and aimed to run him out. Taskin, on the other hand, who was standing near the non-striker's end, gently gestured for the fielder to not throw the ball, letting Gill complete the century swiftly. It happened after Ro dropped jaker Ali in a dramatic hattrick ball for Axar Patel. However, these actions are not new or unusual on the field of the gentleman’s game. But, with the rising heat on both sides of the Tista River, these acts drew fans love and respect for players from both countries. On a sluggish Dubai pitch, where stroke-making was difficult, Gill assessed the conditions perfectly. His 101* off 134 balls ensured stability as wickets fell around him, leading India to a six-wicket victory. India’s chase started well, with Rohit Sharma (41) providing a brisk start. However, his dismissal, followed by quick wickets of Virat Kohli (22) and Shreyas Iyer (15), put India under pressure. Axar Patel’s brief stint didn’t help either. Gill, however, remained unfazed, patiently forming a partnership with KL Rahul (41*), before accelerating towards the end. His well-paced knock was crucial, especially after Bangladesh posted 228, courtesy of Towhid Hridoy’s fighting 102 and Jaker Ali’s 68. Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel starred with the ball, dismantling Bangladesh’s top order before India sealed the win.
