He had to run back, and while completing the catch, he landed awkwardly on his side and hurt his lower rib cage. He was taken out of the ground, but his condition deteriorated in the dressing room. He was thereafter rushed to a hospital in Sydney after his vitals significantly dropped. Shreyas was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for a few days but was discharged and shifted to the general wards quicker than usual. During the pre-match press conference, Surya spoke about Shreyas Iyer, saying that he is in touch with his Mumbai mate. SKY cleared anxiety regarding Iyer, saying that Iyer is replying and is looking good. Moreover, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia also echoed the same in a chat session with TOI. Notably, the team's doctor, Dr Rizwan Khan, stayed with Shreyas Iyer while the team flew to Canberra for the first T20I match. Saikia said to TOI, "Shreyas is much, much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than the doctor expected. I am in regular touch with Dr Rizwan. Normally, he should take six to eight weeks (to recover completely), but you can expect a surprise from him because he may recover much earlier. The doctors are very satisfied with his progress." Saikia further informed that Shreyas will take 7 to 8 days in the hospital, even though he has avoided surgery. He is also walking in the hospital without support and is having solid food. Saikia added, "Shreyas didn’t undergo surgery but underwent a different procedure, which is why he recovered so early."
